Now, juice and smoothie fans have to listen to a lot of criticism… Not enough fibre! Nothing to chew! Too much fruit in one gulp! Not good for the digestion! And I know… i know!
But…! Listen to me. I’m hard working, I’m also somewhat committed to clean eating and an overall healthy lifestyle. And thus, I drink juices.
Not like, in juice cleanses or stuff (although it does sound pretty intriguing to me, I still have my doubts that I would have to overcome yet). And not like heavy OJ drinker in the AM, either. More like: I believe a home made (or cold pressed, hand made) juice, smoothie or agua fresca (my latest obsession) is something not only delicious but also super efficient and with an immense benefit. For me, the occasional (or daily) tiny dose of carrot ginger juice, that I get myself at the exact same time of 07:30 am in the morning from Tibits, next to my work place, is actually doing me good. Yes, life is busy and often hectic, often also less than ideal in terms of healthy lifestyle (what with the late hours and early mornings and only gas station fast food in the fridge…), and a little good quality juice does wonder for my vitamin household (or so I like to think). They’re a quick way to get some vegs and fruit into me. So, let him who is without sin cast the first stone.
Recently, I discovered something that should shut up the (juice) heaters altogether. Permitted? The Smoothie Bowl! Basically the non Swiss version of Bircher Müesli. Like the LA approved, cheeky little sister, more likely. Versatile, healthy, wholesome, nutrient-dense, fibrous… and so yum.
I like to make mine with a variety of ingredients (it’s almost like cooking at the age of 5, ahem). And so I learned a couple of things in the process that I would like to share with you. First, you need a “liquid” base. Think of greek yoghurt, milk, soy or nut milk, coconut water, fruit juices. Then add a carefully curated (in this case: color coordination is key – berry tones!) selection of fruit, berries. Everything from banana, kiwi, strawberries, peaches, mango, apple, pear. Mix it up with a handful of frozen (pre-chopped) fruit as well, for that extra smoothness. And then make it rich by adding proteins like nut butters, maca, matcha or spirulina, acaï, goji, etcetera. Sweeten with a little honey, maple syrup, agave or dates. Blend everything nicely until smooth and creamy. And then top it off with your favorite things: almond slivers, coconut flakes, corn flakes, chia seeds, oat meal or porridge, fruit slices, berries, raw cocoa… Basically: go crazy!
You can even make it your green juice bowl…! Say, with spinach, kale, cucumber, fennel etc… I prefer my non greens in the morning. But hey, not judging.

Makes two bowls
1 small pack (250 ml) coconut milk
1 cup strawberries, chopped
1 cup raspberries (you can use frozen ones here)
1 tbsp. maple syrup (optional)
Toppings: I used a handful each of almond slivers, oats, chia and a handful of the leftover berries.
Add the coconut milk and berries in a blender and blend well. Season with maple. Pour into a bowl and neatly garnish with the toppings of your choice. Enjoy![/twocol_one][fourcol_one_last][/fourcol_one_last][gap height=”20″]
